Note: Before proceeding to the steps below, update your QuickBooks to the latest release and create a backup of your company file.

Solution 1: Identify how many users are affected

Note: If you are not using a username in order to open your company file or if the company file can be accessed by other users, move on to solution 2.

Recognize the number of users that will be affected by utilizing a different login credential to open the same company file. If you are facing the error only in one user account, that user account might be damaged. In that case, repair the damaged account.

 A regular user is damaged

  1. Open QuickBooks on your screen.
  2. Go to Company menu, choose Set Up Users and Passwords > Set Up Users.
  3. If you are an Enterprise user then navigate to the Company menu > choose Users > Set Up Users and Roles.
  4. Choose Add User and then fill in the username and password. Choose Next.

Note: Do not re-use the damaged username.

  1. You should modify the user details as required, then click on Finish.
  2. Navigate to the File menu, and then click on Close Company/Logoff.
  3. Now, use the new account to Login to the company file.

The Admin user is damaged

In this case, you should Download and run the QuickBooks File Doctor. This is a tool which is developed by Intuit to repair QuickBooks components when they are damaged.

Solution 2: Suppress your QuickBooks Desktop

Step 1: Suppress the Desktop while starting QuickBooks

  1. Click on the desktop icon of QuickBooks while pressing and holding the Ctrl key.
  2. Keep holding the Ctrl key till the No Company Open window opens up on your screen.

Step 2: Suppress the Desktop while opening a Company File

  1. Choose the desired company file from the No Company Open window.
  2. Now, Press and hold the Alt key, then choose Open.
  3. If you get a message on your screen asking you to provide your login information, then release the Alt key, and enter your credentials like the username and password.

Note: If you are not prompted for your username and password, do not release the Alt key.

  1. Again, Press and hold the Alt key on your keyboard, then choose OK. Do not release the Alt key until your file is completely open.

Note: It is possible that QuickBooks will show a blank screen. If you are able to highlight a QB menu by just hovering your pointer on it, then it implies that your company file is completely open.

Solution 3: Open a sample company file

We are opening a sample Company file to check if the problem is with your company file or the software itself.

  1. If the error is not resolved and it is still on your screen then you can utilize the last created backup file or ADR to restore your file.
  2. You might need to perform basic data damage troubleshooting steps if the first step is not able to get enough data back
  3. If you are getting the same error while opening the sample file, it will imply that your QuickBooks software is damaged. In that case, move on to solution 4.

To open a sample file

  1. From the No Company Open window, choose to Open a sample file.
  2. Choose any sample file from the list.

To copy the company file to a different location

In this step, we will copy and paste the company file from one location to another. We are doing this to find out if the problem is with the location of the file stored in. It is possible that the location of the file exceeds the file system path limitation. If you encounter the exact same error even after moving the file into a different location, the company file or your QuickBooks installation is perhaps damaged.

  1. Create a new folder on your screen by right-clicking on the screen and choosing New > Folder. You can name this folder QBTEST.
  2. Go to the folder where the company file is stored.
  3. Copy the file by right-clicking on it.
  4. Now, go ahead and paste the company file in the QBTEST folder that we created in the last step.
  5. Open the company file from the QBTEST folder.

Solution 4: Run reboot.bat

Most unrecoverable errors can be fixed by running reboot.bat. It will re-register the QuickBooks related .DLL and .OCX files which can help fix unrecoverable errors.

Solution 5: Troubleshoot the QuickBooks Desktop Application

  1. Repair QuickBooks Desktop by downloading and running the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic tool.
